\n \n\n 7th International Political Field Seminar \n Bri
dges Instead of Walls!\n 4th to the 9th of March 2011\n Organized by the
Alternative Information Center\n Introduction\n In an increasingly gl
obalized world, it is often the case that quantity of information is privi
leged over quality. We often deal with cultures without knowing their hist
ories or the things that we have in common with them. We generalize about
"East" and "West" forgetting that we have several trad
itions, experiences, and values to share. Talking about a cultural conflic
t, or a "clash of civilizations", is an overly simplistic way of
characterizing differences, leaving historical facts, experiences, and co
mmon desires for interaction far from consideration. Mutual understa
nding is the basis on which relationships have to be built, because all &q
uot;sides" share values such as respect, tolerance and peace. Stereot
ypes should therefore not prevent people from approaching the "other&
quot; world, nor limit a constructive dialogue about values, ideals and ou
r common future on this planet.\n The idea to organize these internationa
l field seminars under the slogan “Building Bridges Instead of Walls
” came from these firm beliefs. The seminar program proved its polit
ical, social, and practical importance through the action of the participa
nts, who collectively described it as a very rich experience.\n We at th
e Alternative Information Center will make the necessary efforts to conti
nue developing the seminar experience. In this context the ideas, suggesti
ons and encouragement of the participants and their commitment play an ess
ential role. Let us unite our social, cultural, humanitarian, and politica
l efforts as peoples from many nations in order to end the walls of occupa
tion, aggression, discrimination and racism. Let us build the bridge of ju
stice, peace, equality, human justice and respect.\n HOSTING ORGANIZATI

onally oriented, progressive, joint Palestinian-Israeli activist organizat
ion. It is engaged in dissemination of information, political advocacy, gr
assroots activism and critical analysis of the Palestinian and Israeli con
flict. The AIC strives to promote full individual and collective social,
economic, political and gender equality. Freedom and democracy, as well as
rejection of the philosophy and practice of separation, are aims that the
AIC pursues.\n \n GOALS\n The goal of this field seminar is to
provide participants with elements crucial to deeply understanding th
e context and society of Palestine and Israel, thus enabling them to better
advocate on behalf of a just peace in the region. \n Directly
experiencing the effects of the conflict, as well as the living and poli
tical conditions in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, will provide a u
nique, on the ground experience, as opposed to an understanding based on m
edia, propaganda or rumors. This is a necessary step in the process of und
erstanding the factors that have led to the present situation. Compr
ehensive knowledge is the necessary starting point for building bridges. \n
The Palestinian voice is often ignored or accused of extremism. As
a joint Palestinian-Israeli organisation founded in 1984, the AIC aim
s to create spaces in which the Palestinian people themselves explain
their struggle and give direct witness to their life under occupation.\n
During the seminar we will also conduct interactive meetings and workshops
with Israeli experts and associations that share the same values of the
AIC and are deeply engaged in promoting a just peace and social justice fo
r both Palestinians and Israelis. \n The networking of individuals, associ
ations, political parties, information and media workers is fundamental in
building a pressure group able to encourage governments and economic grou
ps to act responsibly, without ignoring the consequences of their actions
or non-actions. \n TOOLS \n The tools that will be used to achieve the
aims described above include:\n - &nbsp
; Tours throughout the West Bank, Jerusalem and Jaffa to view first-h
and the living conditions of Palestinians under occupation\n -
        Meetings with progressive Israeli soci
al and political groups \n - &nbs
p; Lectures by Palestinian and Israeli experts about topics including econ
omics, human rights, politics, social issues, international law, history a
nd gender\n - Meetings wi
th politicians, social institutions and grassroots associations\n - &
nbsp; Cultural events (concerts, meetin
g with Palestinian families, etc)\n - &
nbsp; Open discussions\n -
   Reflection moments\n - &nb
sp; Participation in nonviolent Palestinian-led demonstrations\n PROGRAM
\n The main guidelines adopted throughout the 7 day field seminar
follow a logical path: providing elements for deeper, reflective understa
ndings, having direct experiences, developing a critical approach and givi
ng suggestions for effective advocacy.\n The first step consists in prese
nting the general framework of Palestine and Israel with historical and pol
itical elements. \n We will present the AIC vision, policies and activiti
es in the field, and also a more comprehensive global perspective related
to the attitude of western and Arab countries toward the conflict. \n &nb
sp;\n · The first on th
e ground experience will be a visit to the Apartheid Wall and refugee camps
  in the Bethlehem area. \n · &nb
sp; The group will attend a demonstration in support of nonviolent resistan
ce. \n · During a visit
to Hebron, where human rights violations occur on a daily basis, participa
nts will meet an association for the monitoring of settlements in Hebron\n
   · During our weekl
y event at the AICafé, participants will meet movements for the Nonv
iolent Resistance.\n · A
visit to Jerusalem is scheduled to see the reality of the Israeli settlemen
ts, both in and surrounding the Old City. \n · &n
bsp; A tour of Jaffa will highlight the ongoing disposse
ssion of the Palestinian population there, and will include meetings with
Palestinian and Israeli social activists. \n · &n
bsp; In Ramallah we will explore the topic of dete
ntion and political prisoners with an association of specialized lawyers a
nd activists, and have a meeting with members of the Palestinian Legislati
ve Council and Palestinian politicians. \n · &nbs
p; Together we will explore the economic dimensions of t
he Israeli occupation, in addition to women and gender issues within both
Palestinian and Israeli societies. \n · &nb
sp; A lecture about Israeli society will offer elements for un
derstanding critical dynamics; the participants, moreover, will meet Israe
li women and men who refuse to serve in the Israeli military. \n ·
         Palestinian activists will pres
ent their activities, and participants will experience the traditional hos
pitality of a Palestinian family in Beit Sahour. \n \n \n T
he draft program is attached. Some changes are possible, although the afore
mentioned structure and topics will be maintained. \n \n You can fi
